SONORA WRESTLERS FALL AT OAKDALE

OAKDALE — An upset victory by freshman Jordan DePaoli was a Sonora High School wrestling highlight in a 42-25 loss to archrival Oakdale in the dual-match finale for both teams Tuesday night.

DePaoli took down Oakdale senior Casey Cole in overtime for a 5-3 victory at 130 pounds.

"It was the best match of the night," Sonora coach Jon Abernathy said.

DePaoli's victory brought Sonora (5-7-1, 3-3-1 Valley Oak League) to within 24-21 in the team score, but Oakdale (6-1) won four of the last five bouts to clinch second place behind Los Banos (7-0).

While the varsity fell, Sonora's junior varsity beat Oakdale to clinch a share of the VOL championship (see below).

Sonora got off to a good varsity start as 171-pounder Robert Reed pinned Tyler Vierra at 3:34 of Round 2 in the opening bout. Freshman 215-pounder Andrew Blume pinned Andy Stever in 1:53 of Round 1 to put Sonora up 12-3, and Gabe Prieto finished off Gonzalo Aguilar at 2:45 in the 103-pound bout to put Sonora back up by nine points, 18-9.

It was mostly Oakdale from then on, as Sonora's only winner other than DePaoli in the last nine bouts was 140-pound senior Andrew Ramirez, who earned four points with a 13-4 victory over Colton Santos.

The match with the most star power took place at 152 pounds, where Sonora senior Joel DePaoli (Jordan's brother) was beaten 8-3 by Tyler Price, who is ranked No. 7 in the state at 145 pounds.

Both won championships in Sonora's Robert Hatler Memorial Tournament in early January in their regular weight classic. Price moved up Tuesday and scored the clinching three points for the Mustangs, making the score 39-25 with one match remaining.

Oakdale's other winners were Bryan Williams, by pin over Nick Blume at 112; Martin Sandoval, by pin over Josh Ditler at 119; Rolando Velasco, 5-1 over Mike Royce at 125; Jeff Cox, by pin over Jed Mele at 135; Derek Green, by pin over Nick Ward at 145; Mike Williamson, 7-2 over Jex Baldwin at 160; Eric Corbett, 14-9 over Brandon Russell at 189; and Jarod Pitassi, by pin over Tim Bates in the heavyweight bout.
