SONORA SWIMMERS SPLASH PAST EAST UNION

MANTECA — Sonora High School's swimming juggernaut rolled over another Valley Oak League foe yesterday as both the boys' and girls' teams routed East Union to improve to 4-0.

The boys knocked off the defending-champion Lancers 100-70 in a meet that was expected to be much closer, while the girls cruised to a 130-41 victory in quest of a second straight title.

Riley Marmesh led the Wildcat boys by winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:1.09) and the 100 freestyle (54.22), and anchoring the victorious 400 free relay team (3:44.24).

He teamed with Robert Dickerson, Curtis Rappe and Josh Land in that event, and also anchored the second-place 200 free relay team (1:40.58), following Dickerson, Derek Drennan and James Pedro.

The relay times both were Sac-Joaquin Section qualifiers.

Marmesh was named boys' swimmer of the meet by Sonora coach LaDeane Hansten.

"Riley has a way of doing exactly what needs to be done for the team in situations where it matters most," Hansten said.

"The need for all the boys to come through was apparent, because we only won three out of eight individual events," Hansten said. "This was a really exciting meet for the boys because East Union beat us to win the VOL last year. It was nice to get the win back this time."

The girls, meanwhile, swam their usual boatload of varsity qualifying times — 11, to be exact.

Heather Fisher was named swimmer of the meet after dropping five seconds in the 100 fly (1:21.42), Guthrie had a frosh-soph qualifier while winning that race (1:10.23), and Allen had a frosh-soph qualifier while taking third in the 500 free (6:04.79).

Sonora won all 11 events and took 1-2-3 in six of them.

The Wildcats have the rest of the week off, then they pay a visit to Los Banos next Tuesday.
