SONORA GIRLS CUT DOWN AT LOOMIS

At Loomis, the Wildcats (4-5) ran into a Bear River buzzsaw and lost 77-36 in the first round of the Del Oro Tournament.

"We got shellacked," Sonora coach Charmon Logan said.

Sonora plays Woodcreek of Roseville in the consolation semifinals today at 4 p.m. and plays Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the seventh-place game or 3 in the consolation final, depending on today' outcome.

It was a rough day all-around for the Wildcats. They had to drive more than two hours north into the teeth of Thursday's storm, then had to come back after the game because today is the last day of academic finals at Sonora. And their return trip was delayed 90 minutes because junior guard Kayla Rodgers had to be taken to an emergency room with a dislocated finger.

They'll be staying over tonight.

"At least today will be calmer," Logan said.

Eight-time Sac-Joaquin Section and three-time state champion Bear River (6-0) lived up to its billing as one of the greater Sacramento area's top teams behind 6-foot-1 perimeter player Meaghan Noud and her 21 points — including two 3-pointers.

"She was a very impressive player," Logan said. "But we just gave them layups because we weren't awake."

Center Jessica Peterson led Sonora with 14 points.
