SONORA BASEBALL LOSES OPENER

HILMAR — Sonora High School finally got its baseball season under way yesterday, falling to Hilmar 8-1 in a non-league game.

The Wildcats were supposed to open last Thursday at home against Summerville, but that game was rained out. They had also missed a scrimmage against Bret Harte because of rain, and a doubleheader against Livingston on Saturday was canceled by Livingston because it had too many games scheduled.

When the opener finally arrived, it got off to a rough start as Hilmar put four runs on the board in the first two innings. The Yellowjackets added four more in the fifth and sixth before Sonora scored in the seventh on a walk by Justin Hart and singles by Jeff Hess and Louis McColloch.

Josh Townsend started on the mound for the Wildcats and pitched three innings, then McColloch worked the last three.

"They both did fairly well," Sonora coach Mike Silva said.

The defense behind them was a bit shaky as Sonora committed five errors.

Tommy Grove had two of Sonora's six hits, and Karl Waite rapped a double.

Sonora's next game is Thursday in the Hughson Tournament, with the time and opponent to be determined.

Tennis

The Sonora boys' tennis team (0-3) dropped a 4-1 decision at Tracy.

The Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team of Cory Siebert and Jarred Orrock tallied the lone point with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory over Tracy's Justin Rita and Richard Costa.

Siebert and Orrock trailed 3-0 in the first set before rallying for a 3-3 tie and winning in a tiebreaker. They then won the second set with a service break at 5-5.

Sonora's No. 2 doubles team of Pat Leahy and Garret Diestel lost a tough 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 decision to Richard Durand and Josh Orsbun, while No. 3 singles player Jonathan Newkirk also went three sets in a 4-6, 7-5, 2-6 loss to Jed Cuaresma.

The Cats returns to the Sonora courts next Monday to play Bret Harte.

Softball

Sonora (0-1) was rained out of yesterday's scheduled home game against Hilmar. The Wildcats visit Hughson on Thursday.
