Rodeo has foothills, national flavor

The annual Mother Lode Roundup Rodeo, which saddles up tomorrow and Sunday, has its usual area and national flavor.

Main performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. each day at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds arena. Sunday morning slack for overflow entries will be at 8.

Slack is where a couple of familiar faces can be seen, as Patrick Grohl of Jamestown and Tammy West of Los Osos will compete in that session of team roping. Grohl will work with partner Robert Staley of Orland, and West, the daughter of Sonora horse trainer Lanny West, will rope with Ryan White of Los Osos.

The Saturday matinees will include team roper Chris Nobles of Vallecito with partner Bert McGill of Fresno, and also barrel racer Tania Baker of Jamestown.

A number of amateur cowboys will compete in local team roping and calf scramble events.

Grohl and Staley will lead off the slack team roping, while West and White will go sixth. Right behind them will be one of the rodeo's star entries, Oakdale's Daniel Green, the No. 4-ranked header in the world in the latest Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rankings. He'll compete with heeler Kelly Dugan of Paso Robles.

Green also will compete in the Sunday slack portion of tie-down roping, which used to be called calf roping.

The Sunday matinee will feature a longtime Roundup favorite, 1975 world all-around champion Leo Camarillo of Oakdale. He'll rope with Justin Spence of Modesto.

Other cowboys with star power are Casey Branquinho, who's No. 12 in the world all-around standings; Ryan Brown, who's No. 11 in bull riding; and Sam Spreadborough, who's No. 15 in saddle bronc riding. The top 15 in each event at year's end qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Branquinho, who hails from Los Alamos (south of Santa Maria along Highway 101), is in the Saturday matinee in three events — tie-down roping, steer wrestling and team roping with heeler Chance Johnson of Coalinga.
