The epic win streak is over.
It took over 6 1/2 years, but the Bret Harte boys’ golf team was finally defeated by a Mother Lode League foe, by the slimmest of margins.
Calaveras edged six-time defending MLL champion Bret Harte 229-230 on Tuesdayat Greenhorn Creek, snapping the Bullfrogs’ 101-match win streak.
“(It was) about as close as you can get,” said Bret Harte head coach Rich Cathcart. “Good match.”
Redskin Sean Fitzsimmons shot a match-best 38 and Garett Williams added a 44. Alec Brotherton had a 46, Brandon Strawn a 49 and Austin Williams finished with a 52.
“It was a real nail-biter,” said Calaveras head coach Rick Behler. “It went down to the last group on the course. It came out our way. Tough, tough match.”
Brotherton parred the ninth hole, a par 5, and sealed the Calaveras victory.
“At the end, Alec was in the last group,” Behler said. “He parred the last hole when we needed to get a 46. It was a huge par on the last hole.”
Fitzsimmons, a senior, won medalist honors and birdied the sixth and eighth holes.
“Sean’s been our top player for three years now,” Behler said. “When we needed him most, he came up the biggest.”
For Bret Harte, Scott Hatfield, Mitchell Menzes and Nicholas Tribble all carded 42s. Riley Gorman fielded a 51 and Erik Vanderliet had a 53.
Calaveras’ (5-0 MLL) next showdown is away against Amador at Castle Oaks. Bret Harte (4-1 MLL) will face Summerville at Mountain Springs. Tee-off on Thursday for both games is at 3 p.m.
“It’s a great win against a very good team that’s won 101 straight matches,” Behler said. “I mean, we have all the respect in the world for that team. 101 wins — they had to beat us 26 times at least — more than that probably. They obviously had our number, but the guys came up big today. It was a total team effort too. Everybody was grinding.”
