Redskin girls No. 1; Wildcat boys'remain at No. 4 |
The Calaveras Redskins girls’ and boys’ basketballs teams made big jumps in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Power Ratings that were released Monday. The Lady Reds (21-1, 11-0 Mother Lode League), after winning both of their games last week, are the new top ranked team in Division IV, displacing previous No. 1 Colfax who lost its first Pioneer Valley League game. The Lady Reds were No. 2 last week. The top 16 teams in Divisions I-V earn postseason berths with the top eight hosting first-round playoff games. The Redskin boys (14-7, 7-4 MLL) made the biggest jump in Division IV, moving to No. 5 from No. 9 after winning both games they played last week. Also in Division IV for boys, the Bret Harte Bullfrogs (18-4, 11-0 MLL), who clinched a share of the MLL title on Friday night, remained in the No. 2 spot behind the private school powerhouse of Modesto Christian (15-4, 8-0 Trans Valley League). The Sonora Wildcats (13-8, 6-4 Valley Oak League) split a pair of games last week, but due to the league strength of the VOL, they remained at No. 4. Riverbank (19-2, 7-2 TVL) is sandwiched in between the Bullfrogs and Wildcats at No. 3. Riverbank owns preseason victories over Bret Harte (51-42), Calaveras (62-50) and Sonora (67-57) but have lost twice to Modesto Christian. The Summerville Bears (11-12, 4-7 MLL) are on the outside looking in at No. 19 but are still alive for a postseason berth with four games remaining. The Bret Harte girls (13-9, 7-4 MLL) inched closer to possibly hosting a first-round game, jumping three positions to No. 10 after winning a pair of games last week. The Sonora girls (13-8, 5-5 VOL) dropped two sports to No. 12 after splitting a pair of games. The VOL has one of the stronger league ratings for girls, so there’s still a chance the Wildcats can host a first-round game. In Division VI, the Tioga Timberwolves boys dropped from No. 3 to No. 4 but are still in position to host. The top eight teams in the division make the postseason. The final power ratings will be released next Monday. |
