Redskin Brianna McGinness named MLL All-League Co-Most Outstanding Player

Calaveras Redskin hoopster Brianna McGinness was named co-Most Outstanding Player and her sister, Bridgette McGinness, was named to the First Team for girls’ basketball in the Mother Lode League for the 2012-13 season.

Brianna McGinness was the leading scorer for Calaveras, which went 19-8 this season and earned a berth in the 2012-13 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Championships. Her sister made the First Team All-League despite having missed several games late in the season due to injury.

“It all goes to my coaches,” said a humble McGinness. “They made me the player I am now. I work hard, do what they say and give 100 percent which is all I can do. I’m glad the effort was noticed and I just wanted to thank all my coaches. This was a really great opportunity.”

The McGinness sisters as juniors were also members of the 2011-12 Redskins who won the section championship.

Argonaut’s Morgan Roots was shared the honor with McGinness. The Mustangs went undefeated throughout the regular season before falling in the semifinals of the section championships.

Also making the First Team was Bret Harte junior Kelsey Switzer, who averaged 13 points per game.

“Kelsey’s definitely gonna give a lot of teams a run for their money because she’s quick, talented and smart,” said McGinness.

Summerville senior Ashley Gamber was the Bears top scorer this season and earned a spot on the First Team.

“I was really happy about that selection,” said Summerville head coach Dave Woods. “I thought she was deserving, I just didn’t know with as strong a team as Argonaut had if we would get enough votes.”

The Bears finished the year with eight wins and at fourth place in the MLL.

Argonaut Mustangs Karissa Cabri, Kobie Pettis and Cara Tortorich were all named to the First Team as well. Cabri earned Most Valuable Player.

On the MLL Second Team: Taylor Martinez, of Calaveras, Sami Seider and Jessie Evans, both of Bret Harte, Kate Sudan, of Argonaut, Carianne Waldera, of Linden, and Alexis Mauck, of Amador.

Earning All-League character awards for outstanding leadership were: Kelly Airola, of Calaveras, Haley Warner, of Bret Harte, Krysta Calkins, of Summerville, Jana Colombini, of Linden, Carly Faustino, of Amador, and Jordan Gold, of Argonaut.

Argonaut boss Mel White was named MLL Coach of the Year.
