Preps roundup: Sonora golf knocks off rival Oakdale

With a 208-223 win over Oakdale on Thursday at Oakdale Golf and Country Club, the Sonora Wildcats boys’ golf team has won 13 straight Valley Oak League matches.

Serge Kiriluk shot an even par 36 to gain medalist honors for the Wildcats. Sam Mays and Brandon Phelan both carded 41s and Spencer Morse and Zach Atwood both finished with 43s.

“It’s a great day when you have a victory,” said Sonora head coach Steve Lee. “We’re keeping it within a reasonable score. Anything under 210 is a good score. We did what we came to do.”

Oakdale was led by Logan Schultz and Josh Barrera with 43s.

Kiriluk and Phelan both had a birdie.

With one more league match, the Wildcats (13-0 VOL) are within reach of capturing a VOL title.

“The kids are excited, but we try to keep it in perspective,” Lee said. “We’re not there yet.”

S’ville girls soccer beats Bullfrogs 2-1

The Summerville Bears girls’ soccer team are road warriors.

Despite playing its sixth straight away game, Summerville beat Bret Harte 2-1 on Thursday at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp.

“It’s tough,” said Bear midfielder Alica Scott. “It’s definitely a strain on the girls to be out late every night and missing classes from school, but we played very strong and kept our heads in it. We played our game. I’m extremely happy and excited.”

Bret Harte struck first in the second half, but Summerville answered when Darian Skellenger sent a ball to a streaking Teska Hapig-Ward in the left wing.

Hapig-Ward then fired the equalizer into the net.

“I saw Teska on that run and I know that she’s a reliable left footed shooter,” Skellenger said. “The whole team was pumped.”

Mali PetersonWood scored the game-winner to give Summerville back-to-back wins this week.

Summerville (5-5-1 Mother Lode League) looks to make it three in a row against Argonaut on Tuesday in Jackson.
