Down 2-0 early in the first half, the Sonora Wildcat soccer team battled back on the road to stun Kimball with a 3-2 Valley Oak League win.
Damien Carrabello scored the game-winning goal with a minute left in regulation on a 35-yard free kick. Carrabello squared his shot that hit the post and deflected off the Kimball goalkeeper’s back and into the back of the net for the improbable goal.
Senior Casey Storm finally put the Wildcats on the board in the first half when he powered a shot off an assist from John Abt to cut Kimball’s lead to 2-1.
It would stay that way until the final minutes when Storm connected on Grant Armas’ free kick in the 77th minute for the equalizer 2-2.
Then Carrabello would answer in the clutch with the last-minute goal to pull out the victory for the visiting Wildcats.
“It was just awesome,” said Cat head coach LloydLongeway. “We showed a lot of heart. Had them on the ropes and couldn’t score, but finally coming up with two goals late, that’s exciting. I’m just proud of the team as a whole.”
S’ville JV gridders start season 2-0
The Summerville Bears JV football team is off to an impressive 2-0 start after a 35-14 beatdown of Rio Americano last Friday in Sacramento.
Sophomore Jake Fulkerson scored on a 75-yard run in the first quarter to open the scoring onslaught for Summerville. Fulkerson added to his total minutes later when he returned a kickoff 65 yards for his second touchdown of the night.
Bear Jacob Hegger ran for a four-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter and Jake Noonan intercepted a pass and returned it the other way for a 70-yard score.
Quarterback Travis Rodgers iced the game with a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Bears started the season with a 15-8 win over Mariposa.
Fulkerson started the scoring in fine style with a 70-yard touchdown run.
The game wasn’t decided until late into the fourth quarter when Rodgers connected with Noonan on a 4-yard touchdown pass.
The coaching staff decided to take the gamble after the Noonan score and went for the 2-point conversion and the gutsy call paid off as Rodgers hit Kenny Warnock in the end zone for the two points.
Bears JV soccer beats Bullfrogs
The Summerville Bears JV soccer team walked away with a 5-2 win over Bret Harte on Tuesday at Dorroh Field.
Bear forward Liam Burke opened the goal-filled game with a strike in the first half off an assist by William Hodge. Burke scored again minutes later to make it 2-0.
But the Bullfrogs would respond almost immediately with two goals to head into the half tied 2-2.
Just two minutes into the second half, Bear Levi Hart-McNeal pounced on a scrambling ball that he tapped into the back in the net for the game-winning goal.
Trey PetersonWood and Ben Richardson both added goals late in the match. Jonah Funk provided the assist on Richardson’s goal.
“All in all, I’m really proud of how the guys responded in the second half,” said Bears JV head coach Kyle Schultz. “The defense held them to only just one shot on goal.”
Summerville improved their record to 1-1 in Mother Lode League play.
