Preps roundup: Bullfrog Heryford wins VFL tourney

Jaymie Heryford is the Valley Foothill League’s finest.

The Bret Harte senior shot an 89 to finish first in the VFL North end-season tournament at the Par 71 Micke Grove Golf Course in Lodi.

The Bullfrogs finished third as a team (440) and Calaveras tied for fourth (496).

Calaveras Redskin Taylor Robinson was one stroke behind Heryford at second.

Bret Harte’s Rilee Hillman carded a 105 to place sixth and teammate Keryn Thompson shot a 117 for 13th.

Robinson earned VFL co-MVP honors while Bullfrogs Heryford, Hillman and Thompson were named all-league performers. All four qualified for the divisional round next Monday at Micke Grove.

Also for Bret Harte, Hannah Ellsworth was 18th (129), Nicole Ayala 21st (131) and Lily Jackson 29th (140).

Redskins Summer Schulze finished 22nd (133), Cally Gustafson 24th (135), Makayla Freitas 27th (138) and Davis Fee 32nd (152).

Cats soccer beaten by Jaguars 5-0

The Sonora Wildcats got behind 2-0 early in the first half, and could not recover the rest of the way to lose 5-0 to Valley Oak League foe, the Kimball Jaguars, Monday at Dunlavy Field.

The Wildcats had a prime opportunity in the first 40 minutes when forward Matt Howard drew a penalty kick inside the 18-yard box. Howard slotted the ball into the back of the net, but was called for an infraction to retake the shot.

On Howard’s second attempt, he blasted the ball on frame, but the Jaguar goalkeeper came up with the big save to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

The Jaguars scored three more goals in the second half on its way to a shutout victory.

“They really got revenge on us,” said Wildcat head coach Lloyd Longeway. “We went down there and barely beat them at the end of the game at their place. We’re back to the drawing board for the home game against Weston Ranch on Thursday.”

In the second half, John Abt created some chances and Scott Liggett provided good pace with precise passing. Gardner Davis and goalkeeper Andrew Klatt played well despite the score.

Sonora’s VOL record dropped to 2-6-1.

Grolle leads Cat runners in Tracy

Steven Grolle raced to a second place finish to lead the Sonora Wildcats at the Valley Oak League No. 2 cross country meet last Wednesday at Eagal Lake in Tracy.

Grolle came in at 17:02 in the 3.1-mile, eight-team, 57-runner race. The Wildcats finished third, losing to Manteca and Sierra.

Wildcats Shaan French Jr. was 13th (18:32), Thomas Kruetzfeld 15th (18:39), Paul Mika 24th (19:27), Sean Brennan 32nd (19:52), Patrick McConnell 36th (20:01) and Sven Sederquist 54th (22:27).

For the junior varsity girls, Madeline Wyman finished in 15th place out of 43 at 28:24. Victor Battle was 17th in the 2-mile frosh/soph boys with a time of 17:00.

Bears cheer to perform together

The Summerville Bears varsity and junior varsity squad will perform with the Tuolumne Bears youth cheerleaders during halftime at Friday night’s JV game against Bret Harte.

This pom performance routine marks the first time the high school and youth cheer programs will collaborate this season.

Kickoff for the JV game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Thorsted Field.

Tioga soccer falls to Langston Hughes

The Tioga Timberwolves boys soccer team battled back from a 3-0 first-half deficit to cut the lead to one, but fell 5-3 to Langston Hughes of Stockton in Groveland.

Down 3-0, Timberwolf Matt Spring scored in the 63rd minute off a through ball from Johny Amoruso.

Amoruso then found the back of the net when he directed a shot that deflected off the cross bar and into goal to make it 3-2.

But Langston Hughes stormed back with goals in the 70th and 75th minute to take a 5-2 lead.

Spring scored the Timberwolves final goal in the last minute when Luis Alecio sent in a low cross in front of goal that he headed in.

Tioga goalkeeper Brett Woods made 11 saves.

Cat JV volleyers dump Timberwolves

The Sonora Wildcats junior varsity volleyball squad beat Sierra 2-0 (25-21, 25-7) Monday on the road.

Kailie Fredrickson had a team-best 12 assists. Elyse Quenville served 6/7 with six kills. Kristin Chormicle served 4/5 and a kill. Adriana Albanez smashed six kills, Michele Parsons three kills, Maddie Stevens two kills, and Grace Hernandez and Makenna Poole each had one.

Also for Sonora, Poole served 5/6 and added six assists.

The Wildcats improve to 7-1 in Valley Oak League play.

Bear JV gridders play Argo tough

The Summerville Bears junior varsity football team grabbed a 28-20 lead in the third quarter on a 55-yard touchdown run by freshman Jacob Hegger, but could not hold on to lose 36-28Friday in Jackson.

Bear quarterback Travis Rodgers scored Summerville’s first TD in the first quarter when he kept the ball for a 30-yard run. Sophomore Kenny Warnock added a 40-yard dash in the second quarter, and Hegger jetted for 50 yards to put the Bears up at the half, 21-20.

With the loss, the Bears drop to 0-1 in the Mother Lode League.

“The kids played hard,” said Bears JV coach Larry Gold. “We just came up short. Great game by Jake Hegger stepping up after losing Jake Fulkerson to varsity. Great, great performance by Jake Hegger.”
