The Summerville Bears jumped all over Linden early Friday night and pulled away to demolish the host Lions 62-35.
The Bears have won 14 straight and remain perfect in the Mother Lode League (14-0) with one game to play.
Summerville essentially put the game out of reach in the first eight minutes, leading 20-3 after the first quarter.
“We just kind jumped on them early,” said Bears head coach Ben Watson. “After that, we executed pretty well in the halfcourt set. They tried to get back in it by shooting 3s, and they hit a couple, but our offense worked pretty well early.”
The Bears extended their lead by halftime to 32-10 and then ran away and hid in the third quarter.
Summerville scored 25 points and held a 57-21 lead heading into the final frame.
“At the start of the third quarter we came out fast-breaking and hitting some shots so it kind of got out of hand for them fairly early in the second half,” said Watson. “We spread the ball around. Jesse (Roberson) had a 3, Joey (Brocchini) had a 3 and Kyle (McLaurin) had a 3 all in the third quarter plus Connor (Morningstar) had six points. We had the outside, inside attack going.”
For the Bears (23-3, 14-0 MLL), who have all but locked up the No. 2 seed, Brocchini scored a game-high 15 points, including four 3-pointers, Morningstar had 10, Logen Foster nine, Rosendo Amaya-Wood scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, McLaurin had points and Roberson added five points.
“Joey shot the ball real well and it was nice to see Kyle McLaurin back in the lineup after his illness and hitting 3s, getting back his shooting stroke because he will be key in the playoffs,” said Watson.
The Bears will visit Amador on Tuesday to finish the regular season.
“Amador had the opportunity to beat us over there the last time (50-48 win) and we narrowly escaped,” said Watson. “I expect it to be the same way. They give us some fits on defense and they can extend us. They’ve got some outside shooters that can make us come away from the basket. They’re trying to get ready for the playoffs too, so they’d like nothing better than to knock us off.”
