Top of the third inning. Host Skyline College is trailing Ohlone 3-1. March 29, 2012. Ohlone, the No. 2 ranked team in California, has a runner on second base with nobody out.

Ohlone owns a Pacific Coast Conference-leading record of 10-1. Skyline’s top starter, Forrest Armanino, is on the hill.

Skyline’s top reliever, Dan Molieri, hasn’t tossed a warmup pitch. Armanino’s pregame instruction from Skyline 15-year coach John Quintell was “pitch five good innings and then turn this game over to Danny.”

But Quintell calls an audible. He wants Molieri. Now. Immediately.

Fly fishing: meeting next week

   The Mother Lode Fly Fishing Club will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the Tuolumne Utilities District offices in Sonora at 5:30 p.m. 
    This meeting will be a seminar on a variety of things. Amongst those are setting up for deep water trolling and fly patterns for local lakes, entomology, instruction on your basic set-up, and fly tying demonstration. This seminar is open to anyone.
    If you wish additional information, please call Club President Cary Westbrook at 533-2314 or Membership Chairman Jerry Whaley at 532-1699.

“If someone’s an athlete, it’s who and what they are, and it’s taken away, it’s devastating,” says Brian Finigan.

And the 51-year-old Mi-Wuk Village resident should know. A 2007 work accident left the avid triathlete severely injured, depressed, and in a wheelchair.

Survey shows fishing is most popular recreation activity

A recent study by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) indicates that fishing remains the most popular recreational activity in the country.

The key finding on fishing participation was that in 2011, 46.2 million Americans participated in fishing, an increase from 45.4 million in 2010.

Bowling report: Porovich, Walker narrowly miss perfect games

Not quite getting the ball and the pins to cooperate for a perfect game were Robert Porovich (Jokers Wild) and Warren Walker (Helakno Full House). Porovich had a 285 for high game, Walker had a 279/738 for high series. Porovich had 10-in-a-row when the 4-6-7 split popped up. 

The women were led by Amanda Klaahsen (Helakno Full House) with a high game of 228 and Nanette Warzee (High Rollers) had series with 611.

Modesto moves into title bracket

Sonorans Wyatt Johnson and Justin Payne are having quite a ride playing on the Modesto Babe Ruth 18-and-under team.

After losing two heartbreaking games in the final inning to begin the World Series tournament in Weimar, Texas, Modesto won its next two in pool play to qualify for the single elimination championship  bracket.

In the Ebbetts Pass region, the North Fork Stanislaus and Beaver Creek are still receiving summer trout plants and stream flows are low and clear to the delight of fly anglers.

They are finding success with black ants, caddis, Royal coachman, and woolybugger flies.

Swift swimmers: TCA earns second at 35th Age Group Open

Kendall Boone, Kathryn Campbell, Ben Chesson, Rajah Foerstner, Dalton Hansten, Matt Scanlin, Samantha Slater and Alan Wells led their 43 teammates this past weekend at Tuolumne County Aquatics to a second-place finish in the 35th annual Age Group Open at Sonora Sports and Fitness Center.

TCA placed second in the three-day meet with 843 points to Ellis Aquatics, of Tracy, with 1,427. Lodi City Swim Club finished in third place with 362 points.

All the local bowling leagues were back in action this week.

And finding the strike zone consistently for women were Jeannie Philbin, of Summer Morning Rollers, with the high game (224) and Amanda Klaahsen, Helakno Full House, with high series of 577 — which edged Philbin by just two pins.
