Oct. 9 Preps roundup: Bear volleyers beat Argo

The Summerville Bears volleyball team are making their case for the Mother Lode League title with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-10) beatdown of Argonaut on Tuesday in Jackson.

Senior standout Nikki Christie powered home four aces and seven kills.

Annie Abenth had a team-high six aces and Breann Robinson had three.

Also for Robinson, she went 30/31 setting with 19 assists and added five kills. Caitie Egger finished with four kills, Shiloh Plaster and Katie Freeman both blasted three.

Kayla Brick received seven serves, Plaster five and Camilla Richardson three.

The Bears improve their MLL record to 5-2 and will play at Calaveras on Thursday, who they beat 3-1 earlier this season at home.

“I was able to play the whole team,” said Bears head coach Greg Harford. “I was able to get good quality contributions to the games.”

Skin volleyers win, stay atop MLL

The Calaveras Redskins volleyball team continued its quest for a Mother Lode League title with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-13) win over Linden on Tuesday to improve its record to 6-1.

The first-place Redskins were led Sam Baseman, who Redskins coach Kristy Dwyer, said did an excellent job hitting, serving and passing in serve receive.

Pookie Deckman and Kelly Airola provided to the Redskins attack with solid setting, while Becca Conley was strong up top hitting and blocking.

Kylie Delaney and Julia DeHerrera were capable fill ins for a missing starter.

Frog volleyers knock off Amador

The Bret Harte volleyball team did Summerville and Calaveras a favor, as well as itself, by beating Amador 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 15-8) on Tuesday in Angels Camp.

Led by great team serving, the Bullfrogs knocked off Amador, who was tied with Summerville in the standings at No. 2.

“The girls served really well to their spots,” said Bullfrogs head coach Richard Juarez. “They served tough to put Amador on their heels. Only four errors in 96 serves is pretty good.”

Junior Jessica Rapetti lead the team with 13/13 serving and three aces.

Shelby Warner went 25/30 hitting with eight kills and Molley Chaney splattered five kills. Maddie Fichtner was a setting machine, going 124/126 with 28 assists.

Chaney, Fichtner, Rapetti and Warner all finished with 20 digs.

Bret Harte golfers cruise over Linden

Bret Harte senior Jaymie Heryford shot a team-best 45 as the Bullfrogs cruised to a 218-243 win over Linden on Tuesday at Lockford Springs Golf Course.

Bullfrog Keryn Thompson shot a 47 and freshmen Hannah Ellsworth and Nicole Ayala carded a 62 and 64, respectively.

The Bullfrogs improve their Valley Foothill League record to 7-2.

Shooters compete at MLGC’s Oct. Match

Twelve shooters came out for the October Match at the Mother Lode Gun Club this past weekend.

Marty Mayo, of Jamestown, was the match winner, shooting a 484-25X.

Joshua Bick, of Tuolumne, finished in the top spot in the first expert category with a score of 477-11X.

Sonora’s Rich Abalos won first marksman shooting 436-5X, while Miles Groves, of Davis, won first unclassified with 368-1X.

At the regional matches in Coalinga, 12 local shooters earned top finishes. Conar Braly, of Copperopolis, took first leather in the leg match with a 472-13X.

Forrest Greenwood, of Ceres, took High Junior with a 775-20X.

Other junior shooters from the area competing in Coalinga were Todd Greenwood of Ceres, Hugh Braly of Copperopolis, Morgan Owen, of Sonora, Sophie Christensen, of Sonora and Fresno, Jake Kulik and Hollie Swenson of Mi-Wuk, Carl Tennis, of Modesto, Mike Barranco, of Turlock, and Ed and Samantha Taylor, of Sonora.
