CERES A pair of newcomers helped keep the Sonora High School girls soccer team on its early-season tear as the Cats downed Ceres 3-2 on Tuesday.

Sophomore midfielder Haley Hohengarten made her varsity debut an impressive one, scoring the Cats second goal on an unassisted shot in the 56th minute off a rebound.

Just as impressive was goalie Michele Banks in her first game of the season. Banks recorded four saves and was not shy about leaving the net to thwart breakaways.

Needless to say, the goalkeeper position is quite difficult to fill and Michelle has (the) tremendous height, jump and reach we have been looking for for several years, Sonora coach Rick Mogg said.

As important as Hohengarten and Banks were to the Cats win, so was forward Heather Duerkop, with two goals. Her first goal tied the game 1-1 at the 25th minute while her second score broke a 2-2 tie in the 79th minute off a superb cross from Amber Carver, according to Mogg.

Candace Gordon and Jessica Mullins (also making her first appearance of the season) clamped down defensively after allowing Ceres to take an early 1-0 lead while Megan McInnis and Natalie Noble handled the middle of the field.
