The Bret Harte Bullfrogs remain all alone atop the Mother Lode League after a 221-242 road win over Linden on Thursday at Lockeford Springs Golf Course.
The Bullfrogs are 5-0 and Linden is 2-4.
“Today was the first match we’ve had everybody shoot in the 40s which I’m very pleased about,” said Bret Harte head coach Rich Cathcart. “I was a little concerned coming into this match because Linden had been scoring very well lately on their home course. Our kids stepped it up and played very well.”
Leading Bret Harte was Alex Milward with a 40. Also scoring for Bret Harte were Jayden Saville 42, Rodney Riner 43, Harly Langlois 47 and Pat Groat 49.
“This was a really big win for us,” said Milward. “It was our lowest-scoring match all year.”
Most remarkably, Bret Harte has gone four-and-a-half years without an MLL loss.
“We don’t feel any added pressure because of that streak,” said Milward. “We’re proud of it. But we don’t go into any matches even allowing ourselves to think about that. Instead we just concentrate on doing our best and going out there and shooting our best. It’s just a streak — but we do want to keep it alive.”
Bret Harte lost four seniors to graduation from last years’ championship squad.
“Because we lost four guys from last year, I have been very surprised that our team this year is playing so well,” said Milward. “We’re playing much better than I could have expected. I thought this year would be just a complete challenge for us. But, now, a league championship is not out of reach for us.”
