MONROE WINS; SOCCER CATS LOSE

PATTERSON — Tioga High School's Dan Monroe stayed ahead in the Southern League's Most Valuable Player race by taking medalist honors in Thursday's 242-248 dual-match boys' golf loss to Orestimba of Newman at Diablo Grande.

Monroe shot a four-over-par-40 on the long, demanding course and will take a 12-point lead into Tuesday's SL Tournament at Stevinson Ranch outside Hilmar.

Jim Atkins shot a 45 for Tioga (7-10) against Orestimba, which was led by Brent Lerno's round of 43 in the last match of the regular season.

The Wildcats (6-9-3, 2-6-2 Valley Oak League) ran into a buzzsaw and lost 9-1 to East Union in Manteca. Kelli Goes scored five goals for the Lancers (7-2-1 VOL), who were coming off a 2-2 tie with perennial champion Sierra of Manteca.

Heather Duerkop scored Sonora's goal on a penalty kick after Hannah Boyack was taken down in the 49th minute, and freshman goalie Julie Ross made 16 saves.

"The game stayed primarily in the East Union defensive half until they made some adjustments that we didn't respond to right away," Sonora coach Rick Mogg said. "They also began to dominate control of the ball in the midfield and delayed just long enough to set up some extremely productive breakaway midfield runs that produced most of the goal scoring."

Sonora finishes up next week with a road game Tuesday against Los Banos at 4 p.m. and a home game Thursday against Oakdale at 6:30.

Frosh-Soph — Sonora (9-8-2, 4-7-1) got goals from Kim McClung and Amanda McColloch in a 4-2 loss to East Union. Rachel Callahan assisted McClung, while Elly Kerns made five saves.

Rainouts

Summerville's girls' soccer game at Linden, its coed tennis match against Amador at Columbia College and its track meet against Argonaut in Jackson were rained out yesterday, as were Sonora's softball game at Manteca and its home track meet against Manteca.

The soccer game has been rescheduled for May 8 and the softball game for Monday. The Sonora track meet will not be made up.
