MLC boys break losing skid

TURLOCK — Mother Lode Christian School came up with a much-needed boys' basketball victory Tuesday night, 64-46 over Turlock Christian at Dutcher Elementary School.

The Cougars (12-4, 2-2 Mountain Valley League) snapped a two-game league losing streak and set themselves up for a five-game homestand they hope will propel them into the thick of the league race.

They are two games down in the loss column to defending champion Elliot Christian of Lodi (14-4, 4-0), and one down to both Stockton Christian (9-4, 4-1) and Calvary Temple of Modesto (12-5, 3-1). Mother Lode has lost to both Elliot and Calvary and hosts Stockton on Friday night to start the homestand.

"There was a lot of excitement (about beating Turlock)," Mother Lode coach Branden Hall said. "We needed that win, and it came against a good team."

Turlock (7-7, 1-3) doesn't have a stellar record but owns an impressive victory over Calvary.

Chuck Storm hit three 3-pointers on his way to 17 points for Mother Lode, while Cory Henson and Steven Baldwin scored 10 points apiece in the Cougars' best performance of the league season.

Mother Lode trailed 28-26 at halftime but intensified its press and blew past Turlock with an 18-5 burst in the third quarter for a 44-33 lead.

"We played a great third quarter defensively," Hall said. "We really stepped it up."

Blake Falkenburg led Turlock with 15 points.

After hosting Stockton, Mother Lode is home against Tioga next Tuesday, Don Pedro the following Friday, Elliot on Feb. 4 and non-league foe Stoneridge Christian of Merced for Homecoming on Feb. 7.

Frosh-Soph — Jacob Acker scored 13 points for Mother Lode (5-3, 0-3) in a 40-25 loss to Turlock.
