Lutes' season concludes in quarterfinals

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — South Dakota State ended the season of Sonora product Beccie Lutes, then went on to capture the NCAA Division II women's basketball championship.

The school from Brookings, S.D., ran roughshod over Lutes and her Bakersfield State University teammates, 83-62, in the national quarterfinals. After that, the Jackrabbits won 69-62 in overtime over Bentley of Waltham, Mass., in the semifinals and 65-50 over Northern Kentucky of Highland Heights, Ky., in the Saturday's championship game.

Lutes, a sophomore guard who graduated from Sonora High School in 2000, finished as Bakersfield's fourth-leading scorer with an average of 11.8 points per game. She also averaged 3.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals for the Roadrunners (29-2), who won the California Collegiate Athletic Association and NCAA West Regional championships.

She was a four-year varsity player and two-time all-Valley Oak League selection at Sonora, and helped the Wildcats win two VOL titles. She played her first year of college ball, in 2000-01, at Humboldt State in Arcata, then transferred to Bakersfield.

The Roadrunners have had a team for only three seasons and have been in the NCAA tournament each year.
