Low starring in D-II basketball

The varied and successful collegiate athletic career of Summerville High School product Hannah Low is going strong with the women's basketball team at San Bernardino State University.

Low, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, was named California Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week after leading San Bernardino to a 72-68 road victory over two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion Cal Poly-Pomona in the conference opener.

She scored 18 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing one assist. Low got into foul trouble and didn't score in a rematch a few days later, but San Bernardino (5-1, 2-0 CCAA) won again, 71-67.

Wednesday night, Low made two free throws with one second left to give San Bernardino a 53-52 non-conference, homecourt victory over Northwest Nazarene of Nampa, Ida. She is averaging 9.7 points per game for the Coyotes, who share the CCAA lead with Grand Canyon of Phoenix (4-1, 2-0).

Low starred in volleyball, basketball and softball at Summerville, where in her senior year (1998) she led the Bears to the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. She was a basketball standout and an all-state softball player for two years at Merced College and then a starting first baseman and outfielder the last two seasons at the University of Tennessee.

She had visited San Bernardino while being recruited for softball out of Merced, and the Coyotes kept their athletic scholarship offer open to Low. She left Tennesse, where her athletic career was complete, and joined the San Bernardnio basketball in her final season of eligibility.

Low and another former Summerville player who went to Merced, 6-1 junior center Marion Laird, will make five appearances in Northern California — Jan. 10th at UC Davis, Jan. 11 at Chico State, Feb. 28 at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, March 1 at San Francisco State and March 8 at Stanislaus State in Turlock for the regular-season finale.
