Leers sinks 1st hole in one at SC

With just more than two years of golf experience, Sonora resident Ed Leers accomplished a feat of which all golfers dream.

The 52-year old Leers walked up to Saddle Creek’s Hole 11, a 115-yard par 3, and let it fly with a pitching wedge.

Leers’ brother-in-law, Kevin Otto, 53, of Clovis, thought the ball had no chance and said it was too far.

Within seconds Leers proved Otto wrong and he sank the first hole-in-one in his short career.

“It pretty much cleared it,” Leers said. “It went way up in the air and it landed about a foot and a half in front of the hole. It took a little hop right and the spin stopped the ball and rolled left and disappeared. It was cool. It’s pretty much a rarity.”

Leers wife, Christine, was in shock.

“I was jumping up and down,” she said. “I think I was doing what they call a hole-in-one dance.”

For Otto, a competitive golfer, he wasn’t celebrating.

“He wasn’t too happy because he’s always wanted to beat my husband,” Christine said. “My brother’s been playing for four years. I don’t think you can write what my brother said, but he was happy for him.”

Leers golfs once or twice a week, and the hole-in-one is something he will brag about in the future.

“I been playing for just a little over two years,” Leers said. “That will piss off all the golfers. I have buddies who are way better than me. The have been playing 20, 30 years and they haven’t got one. And I just got one.”
