Late pin clinches Sonora's first mat win

A pin by sophomore Jed Mele in the 135-pound bout clinched Sonora High School's first dual-match wrestling victory of the season, 43-30 over Buhach Colony of Atwater on Wednesday night at Bud Castle Gym.

Mele put Cori Maldonado's shoulders to the mat at 3:24 of the second round for six points and an insurmountable 37-24 lead for the Wildcats (0-2-1, 1-0-1 Valley Oak League) with two bouts remaining.

Senior Andrew Ramirez iced the cake by pinning Erik Warren at 1:50 of Round 1 in the 140-pound bout.

Sonora withstood four pins and a forfeit.

"We wrestled well, but inconsistently," Sonora coach Jon Abernathy said. "We're giving up too many fall points. It takes two decisions to make up for one pin. That's the price we pay for being a young team."

Pins are worth six points, while decisions are worth three, four of five depending on the margin of victory.

Sonora's only other pin was by Joel DePaoli, who made quick work of Mike Moorhead in the first bout of the night at 152. DePaoli won in 47 seconds.

Jex Baldwin followed with a 5-2 victory over Alen Sotelo at 160 and Sonora had a 9-0 lead.

"We're getting continued solid performances from our three seniors," Abernathy said, making note of DePaoli, Baldwin and Ramirez.

Oscar Valdez picked up a pin for Buhach at 171, then Sonora got 12 forfeit points at 189 and 215, and Buhach got six with a heavyweight forfeit.

Gabe Prieto won a four-point major decision, 11-3 over Dorian Lewis at 103, and Sonora led 25-12. After Buhach made things tight, 25-24, on pins by Jewel Jackson at 112 and Jarod Lawson at 119, Sonora's Mike Royce and Jordan DePaoli responded with decisions at 125 and 130, respectively, to put Sonora up 31-24 going into Mele's climactic bout.

Royce won 7-3 over Chris Cabrito and DePaoli 10-4 over Barret McQuillen.
