The Calaveras Redskins girls’ basketball team finished runners-up in the Stagg Tournament in Stockton.
The Redskins won their first two contests on Thursday and Friday, then were defeated by Weston Ranch, 59-58 on Saturday.
“It was a fun game to coach and fun to watch for the fans,” said Redskins head coach Mike Lewis. “We just came out on the wrong end of the score.”
The Redskins took the lead after a Megan Coleman putback with 8.3 seconds left. Then Weston Ranch hit the winner with 1.2 seconds left.
The Redskins trailed 27-22 at halftime but led 43-41 after three quarters.
“In the third quarter we came out and played very well with our press causing numerous turnovers and the offense working well,” said Lewis.
For Calaveras, 2011 All-Area MVP Nikki Gleason scored 16 points, had 10 steals, and dished seven assists. She made First-Team All-Tournament.
Also for Calaveras R.B. Ruhl scored four points and Brianna McGinness scored seven, grabbed nine rebounds and earned First-Team All-Tournament honors.
Maddie Cox scored 10 points, made four steals, grabbed seven boards and also was a First-Team honoree. Savannah Duncan scored 15 points and made five steals and made First-Team honors.
Also for the Redskins, Raylene Bonham, Bridgette McGinness and Megan Coleman scored two points apience.
“For the tournament we had good all-around play from Nikki, Savannah, Maddie and Brianna,” said Lewis. “We had very consistent play off the bench from Megan Coleman, Paulina Mejia and Bridgette McGinness.”
The Redskins defeated Chavez, 60-45, on Friday in the semifinals. Duncan scored 12 points and Gleason and Cox scored nine apiece.
Gleason grabbed 10 rebounds and dished four assists. Cox grabbed 13 rebounds and Coleman 10.
