Kokanee the hot item at Melones

KOKANEE FISHING is red-hot at New Melones Reservoir.

Landlocked salmon in the 13- to 14-inch and one-pound range are going for Apex, Syclops, Hootchies, Uncle Larry's or Wedding Ring Spinners, Sockeye Slammers and Father Murphy's Bugs, all tipped with shoepeg corn.

The areas to target are between the spillway and dam, the islands near Tuttletown, and off of Glory Hole Point at 40 to 60 feet deep (shallowest in the morning) over 150 to 200 feet of water.

A few of the many anglers who caught limits of kokanee or kokanee and trout this week were Joe Hallett, Richard Kowski, Judy Schaefer, Mike Felts, 4-year-old James Bionaz, Don Bionaz and John Darroch.

THE ENTRANCE gates at Melones will be in operation soon, so be sure to call the visitors' center at 536-9094 before planning to arrive late.

This nighttime gate closure is because of vandalism that the Bureau of Reclamation is experiencing at the lake.

TROUT FISHING has been good, with plenty of big German browns being caught.

Anglers who troll the main lake between the spillway and dam, and the mouths of the major creek arms such as Carson or Coyote Creek, are having the best luck at 40 to 60 feet.

Byron Castellanos of Oakdale won the Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest in Angels Camp with a 7.1-pound rainbow he caught while trolling with some friends near the dam.

The winning fish was part of an impressive limit that also had fish of four, 3.6, 3.1 and 2.5 pounds.

Kowski caught a 5.5-pound brown, as well as two kokanee and two rainbows, while Bill Dockery caught a 5.4-pound brown and Bobby Layne caught a three-pound brown.
