Klaahsen, Flanagan lead pin knockdown parade

By Ruth Abreo

For The Union Democrat

All the local bowling leagues were back in action this week.

And finding the strike zone consistently for women were Jeannie Philbin, of Summer Morning Rollers, with the high game (224) and Amanda Klaahsen, Helakno Full House, with high series of 577 — which edged Philbin by just two pins.

Trying hard for a perfect game was Kevin Flanagan, of Helakno Full House. Although he came up short, he finished with the high game (269) and a whopping series of 771 for the men.

Dan Isam (High Rollers) also found his strike zone and recorded the only other 700 series — a 701.

Others who rolled their shiny — or dull — balls for reportable scores include: High Rollers — Dan Isam and CJ Lattin with 258 each; Young at Heart — Jim Simmons 257; Jokers Wild — John Miller 683; Helakno Full House — Dave Rossi 267.

The “I can’t believe I beat myself” club inducted just two bowlers.

Stephen Patton, of Diamond Duos, was 72/163 pins over his average and bowled a 233/646 and High Rollers Melissa Hall was 75/141 pins over with a 191/489.

Some near misses of this club include High Rollers Sandy Taylor who was 72 over with a 223 and Carroll Manning who was 70 over with a 247.

In the Black Oak 9-Pin No-Tap league, Bob Wright just missed a 300 by three pins. He rolled a 297 for the high game and Bruce Peterson had the high series with an 813.

Terry Hall is still on a no-tap roll following the last couple of weeks rolling a 267/683 for the women.

The Wild Nite Out league saw some familiar names in the top spots, such as Jayna Arechiga with a 172 game and Nanette Warzee with a 484 series for the women.

For the men it is Dale Robbins with a 169 game and Brian Kermeen with 468 series.

It’s better late than never, but Nan Anderson earned first place (1657) in the amateur part of the recently-held Pro-Am at Black Oak Lanes.

In second place was Paul Padavana (1595) and Bill Bowcutt finished third (1583).

The Pro section was won by Dennis Horan, Jr. who defeated Jim Pratt in the final set.

There are several upcoming tournaments and they include: SIRS at Black Oak on Aug. 6 and/or 9; Reno — annual Reno SIRS Aug. 20-22 (Entry forms are available at Black Oak and online at www.sirinc.org; The Silverado National Open scheduled for Aug. 26-29 in Reno at the National Bowling Stadium. For more information, call Jimmy Sturm at 1-888-808-7720.

There will be both a Youth Pro-Am and an Adult Pro-Am with a cost of $139 for either and also includes a new bowling ball.

A Celebration of Life for Betty Schlegel, the past President of the California Women’s Bowling Association, will be held on July 28 at 1 p.m. at Gold Country Lanes. She passed away on June 24.

Trivia answer: Frank and Mary Ziegenhein and Virgil and Cheri Dickens who purchased the bowl in a bankruptcy sale.
