THE TRI-COUNTY Junior Golf Association got its 2003 season started yesterday with a tournament at sun-splashed Forest Meadows in Murphys.
The low score of the day, a six-over-par 66, was posted by Bret Harte High School sophomore Darren Baca, who helped the Bullfrogs win the Mother Lode League championship during his freshman season.
He breezed in the 14-17 age group by 17 strokes over the runner-up, Valley Springs' Nick Roget, who shot an 83. David Rosa of San Andreas was third with an 87.
In the girls' 14-17 division, Brandy Gray won with an 81 and was followed by Colleen Smith (102) and Caitlin Locke (105).
John Pesce shot 37 to win the boys' 11-13 nine-hole division by four strokes over Russel Riner and Kevin Rei.
Rodney Riner won the four-hole group for ages 7 to 10 with a score of 20. Will Jones had a 28 and Jeff Hillman a 47.
The next of 11 Tri-County events is Thursday, June 26, at Mountain Springs outside Sonora. Also on the schedule are tournaments at Twain Harte on July 9, Mace Meadow in Pioneer on July 10, Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp on July 15, Pine Mountain Lake in Groveland on July 21, Castle Oaks in Ione on July 22, La Contenta in Valley Springs on July 29, Sequoia Woods in Arnold on Aug. 5, Phoenix Lake (the Sal DeMarco Memorial) on Aug. 7., and Saddle Creek in Copperopolis (the Tournament of Champions) on Aug. 11.
GOLF LESSONS for ages 7 to 16 are being offered at Mountain Springs through the Tuolumne County Recreation Department.
Instructors Tony Murphy and Mary Oliver will lead sessions from July 14 through Aug. 6 for ages 7 to 11 from 8:30 to 9:30, and for ages 12 to 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 Monday and Wednesday mornings.
