JUMPERS GO COLD AGAINST DE ANZA

CUPERTINO — After a blistering first half from the 3-point line, the Columbia College basketball team turned ice-cold in the second half as it dropped a 96-85 decision at De Anza on Thursday night.

The Claim Jumpers (10-6) were 9-for-13 from the arc in the first half as they built a 49-38 lead. But with the Jumpers' shooting 0-for-12 from long range in the second half, De Anza managed to outscore Columbia by 22 points.

"You can blame it on a lot of things," Columbia assistant coach Rich Murphy said. "Driving three hours in the rain to get there, thinking about Christmas break, not having Ben Hibbing (out with a stress fracture on top of his left foot) …

"But what it comes down to is not playing well as a team," he added. "We played pretty solid ball in the first half. But in the second half, we tried to do too much one-on-one instead of playing as a team, and we don't do that very well."

Kevin Massey led the Jumpers with 19 points while Derek Olich and Jeff Conaway added 14 points apiece. Colin Terry (12 points) and Josh Houtekamer (10) also reached double figures.

Houtekamer led Columbia with five rebounds, but De Anza "killed us on the offensive boards," Murphy said. "They got way too many second shots, especially in the second half."

Columbia returns to action on Jan. 4 at Shasta of Redding, then opens Central Valley Conference play Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Oak Pavilion against Reedley.
