Hughson beats BH with halfcourt shot

Blake Severson fired in a shot from beyond the halfcourt line as time expired to give Hughson High School an improbable 61-58 boys' basketball victory over Bret Harte on Tuesday night at the Bret Harte gym.

The Huskies came from 10 points behind in the last four minutes to gain some revenge for a 70-51 loss to Bret Harte on Dec. 6 in Hughson.

"I've lost big leads before, but I've never lost a game on a shot like that," Bret Harte coach Jerry Rucker said.

Moments before Severson's bomb, Bret Harte (7-9) was setting up for a possible game-winning shot of its own with the scored tied 58-58. The Bullfrogs lost possession with four seconds left, however, when Travis Emerson was called out of bounds while catching a baseline pass from Guy Castle.

After a timeout, Hughson inbounded to the 6-foot-5 Severson, who took a few dribbles and let fly. The ball hit nothing but net from about 50 feet away, giving Severson the last of his game-high 19 points and handing the Huskies a victory to remember.

Hughson's other big guy, 6-7 Steve Randi, scored 15 points.

"We're so small, it's just hard for us to score inside or to guard big guys," Rucker said.

But it was outside shooting that brought Hughson back from a 54-44 deficit as the Huskies made three 3-pointers in the minutes before Severson's winner.

"They just all of a sudden got hot," Rucker said. "It wasn't that we were missing free throws or anything (the Bullfrogs were 7-for-8 in the fourth quarter), but we had a few turnovers."

Emerson led Bret Harte with 18 points, while Scott Russell scored 12 and Castle had 11.

The Bullfrogs' final non-league game is Friday at Patterson. Their Mother Lode League opener is the following Friday at home against Linden.
