Holloway hits hole-in-one

When Sonora High senior Emma Holloway hit the first hole-in-one of her short career on Sept. 8 at Phoenix Lake Golf Course, she couldn’t believe it.

After taking a swing with her 8-iron on the Par 3, No. 8 hole, Holloway turned around and grabbed her card to fill it out. It wasn’t until she reached the green that she realized her ball was missing.

Holloway looked around with her teammates Barbara and Donna Pryor and Olivia Partone, but they couldn’t track it down.

Then Holloway, who has only been playing since her freshman year, took a peek inside the hole — and there it was.

“I was very, very surprised and very happy,” Holloway said. “I didn’t even know how to feel, it was confusing. Now, knowing that I was able to do something that golfers look forward to their whole life, it was a big accomplishment.”

With Holloway’s hole-in-one leading the way, her team took second place at the women’s invitational team scramble.

“Most of the ladies that play in the invitation have been playing for a very long time,” Holloway said. “It was really cool to be ahead of those ladies.”

Holloway is also a standout for the Wildcat girls golf team. She is the points leader for Sonora and has earned six medalist finishes this year. She shot a season-low 39, four over, on the Wildcats home course, Phoenix Lake, against Valley Oak League power East Union last month.

With her progression as a senior, Reed Munn has noticed the importance of Holloway to the squad in his first year as the Wildcat head coach.

“She’s a really good golfer,” Munn said. “Always an upbeat attitude. A pleasure to have on the course. She also mentors the new golfers. She’s not just a player, but she’s definitely a teammate. As my first year coaching, I’m glad to have her on the team, she’s been welcoming to me as well.”

The golf course isn’t the only place that Holloway enjoys spending her time. As a member of Sonora High’s Associated Student Body, she helps plan entertaining and fun activities for Wildcat students.

“I’m in ASB, so I’m really involved in the school,” Holloway said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

The 17-year-old hopes she can keep playing in college, since the golf course makes her feel at home.

“I really like being able to come out on the course and be calm and hang out with my friends on the team,” Holloway said. “I just love it.”

Holloway, Wildcats send Kimball home with loss

Wildcat senior Emma Holloway earned medalist honors Monday to lead the Sonora High girls golf team to a 257-275 win over Valley Oak League rival Kimball at Phoenix Lake Golf Course.

Holloway shot team-low 45. Tallon and Megan Popovich carded a 48 and 49, respectively. Jacqui Jordet finished with a 57, Olivia Partone a 58 and Kim Adams added a 64.

The Wildcats improved their VOL record to 9-4 good for second place.

Sonora next will play Oakdale on Wednesday at Phoenix Lake and will end the regular season a day later at Weston Ranch in Stockton.

The top three teams in the VOL qualify for postseason and the second-place Cats are in a position to grab one of those spots.
