Hoffman-Brady leads Bear runners

The Summerville Bears traveled to Modesto’s Legion Park for the Sierra Invitational cross country meet on Saturday and raced well.

Junior Christopher Hoffman-Brady led the Bears with a fifth place finish in the varsity boys 5K race, clocking in at 17:42. Morgan Owen was 77th and Jake Kulik 85th with times of 22:58 and 23:29, respectively.

In the girl’s varsity race, Joslyn Robles came in 81st at 31:52 and Candi Whitehead 85th at 34:52.

The sophomore boys came in second in team scoring right behind Oakdale. Stephan Higginbotham raced to a 10th place finish at 11:58. Gaige Stewart and Devon Groff were 14th and 15th in 12:06 and 12:09 each.

Kiki Cazeres and Maya Roe led the sophomore girls and came out on top with a 1-2 finish in the two-mile race at 13:36 and 13:37, respectively. Melissa Murry, Kara Wessel and Shelby Conklin finished 21st, 22nd and 23rd in 16:21, 16:40 and 16:55. As a team, the sophomore Bears were two points shy of a first-place finish to Waterford.

In the freshmen boy’s two-mile race, the Bears came in first and second with Jackson McIlroy winning in 11:21 and Colby Dibble just a few ticks later at 11:37. Garret Rebelo was 20th in 14:00 and John Hoffman-Brady was 28th in 14:52.

Sarajean St. John finished sixth in the freshmen girl’s two-mile race in 14:56. Mindy Belgard was 22nd in 18:47.

Up next for the Bears is the Bret Harte Invitational on Saturday at Frogtown.
