Bailey Henington made a steal at half court with under a minute to go on Friday and drove for a layup to help the Sonora Wildcat girls escape Livingston with a 48-47 hoops victory.
With seven seconds to go, Henington made another steal to help seal the win.
“Bay’s got great instincts for the ball and had a good defensive game,” said Sonora head coach Amy Santos. “Overall, it was a sloppy game that was officiated different than what we’ve seen so far this season. We didn’t really earn the win but we worked hard throughout and it paid off for us in the end.”
Henington finished the night with a game-high 12 points while making six steals and dishing six assists.
The Wildcats led by two after the first period (7-5) but trailed by three (23-20) at halftime.
“We switched our defense up a little and were able to go on a few little runs in the second half,” said Santos.
Also for Sonora (7-3), Shea Stead provided a spark off the bench scoring nine points and also grabbing four rebounds, Leah Dambacher added eight points and nine rebounds, Bryanna Owens scored sixpoints and hauled in seven rebounds, Stephanie Chung netted five points, including the Cats only 3-pointer, Angela Gardella had four points and a game-high 13 rebounds and Jessie Fong and Maria Chacon each scored two points and had 4 steals.
“A win’s a win, but hopefully we can clean it up and adjust to the officiating sooner from now on,” said Santos.
The Wildcats next will play at Ceres on Thursday and then will start the new year with their Valley Oak League opener on Jan. 2 at Weston Ranch.
JV—The Wildcats fell 43-26.
“It was a hard-fought game and the score doesn’t reflect the girls hard effort for the full 32 minutes,” said head coach Nicki Holt. “They showed tremendous heart.”
For Sonora, Brooke Canepa scored 10 points, Hannah Garrett scored eight points and Suzanne Kristapovich, Erin Campiotti, Elyse Quenniville and Kailie Frederickson each scored two points.
