Gourley, Baier set Sonora swim records

CONCORD — Senior Alison Gourley and junior Katie Baier set school records to highlight the Sonora High School girls' swim team's performance in the De La Salle Relays on Friday and Saturday.

Gourley's record came in the 200-yard individual medley, which she swam in 2:16.31 to finish second in the prestigious meet. She improved on her previous best of 2:17.86 by more than 1.5 seconds.

Baier's mark was set in the 50 freestyle, which she won in 25.01 — a personal best by 36-hundreths of a second. Baier also finished second in the 100 back in 1:03.89, an improvement of nearly a second.

Tennis

Sonora (5-6, 5-3) began the second half of VOL play with a 13.5-1.5 boys' victory over Buhach Colony in Atwater.

The match of the day was at No. 1 doubles, with Sonora's Jared Orrock and Garrett Diestel taking a 10-8 decision from Son Nguyen and Sean Landers. The pairs stayed on serve until 8-8, then Orrock and Diestel broke for a 9-8 lead and followed up by serving out the set.

They also won 10-4 over Ryan Brenes and Aaron Lingberg.

All three Sonora singles players swept, with No. 2 Jason Diestel posting an impressive game count of 18-1. He beat Tony Calip 6-1, then bageled both Jose Lopez and Chris Rogers.

Baseball

Sonora (5-8, 0-4 VOL) had a rough time Friday in a 12-0

loss to Sierra in Manteca.

"They just came out hitting the ball and we didn't," Sonora coach Mike Silva said. "Our guys are all trying 100 percent, but it's just not coming out right."

Sierra pitcher David O'Brien allowed only two hits — singles by Justin Hart and Brian Sipe — while striking out five in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run-lead rule. The Timberwolves (8-6, 3-1) backed him by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning and seven in the fourth.
