DAVIS Tommy Grove's personal best in the 200-meter dash highlighted Sonora High School's track performance in the Sac-Joaquin Section Trials yesterday at the University of California's Toomey Field.
Grove, a junior, clocked 22.67 seconds to rank 11th out of 24 runners in three heats representing three sub-sections. He needed to be in the top eight to qualify for tomorrow's finals.
In the 100, Grove finished out of the money in 11.31. In the 4x100 relay, Grove, Nick Baker, Bryann Turner and Dean Freitas ran a non-qualifying 44.28.
The top qualifier in the 100 and 200 was Chris Henry from Edison of Stockton in 10.56 and 21.72, respectively. He also anchored Edison to the fastest relay time (41.96).
Sonora has two athletes in the finals, boys' high jumper Ryan MacDonald and girls' pole vaulter Angela Pinocchio. Trial weren't held in their events.
Pinocchio will be ferried to the meet from Merced, where Sonora coach Robert Cendro will meet a bus carrying Pinocchio and other seniors home tomorrow afternoon from their annual Grad Nite trip to Disneyland.
Also in the finals will be Summerville's Marc Pruitt in the boys' 3,200-meter run. He broke a 26-year-old school record when he ran 10:06.71 while finishing sixth in last Friday's Sub-Section 1 Finals at Modesto Junior College.
