Frogs to knock heads with another tough foe

The Bret Harte High School football team is looking for another toe-to-toe slugfest tomorrow night against Argonaut of Jackson, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. at Dorroh Field.

"We'll line up 11 guys and smack heads, just like we have the last two weeks," Bret Harte coach Gordon Sadler said.

The Bullfrogs (1-5, 0-1 Mother Lode League) have held their own in rugged losses of 20-7 at Hughson and 21-17 to Amador in Sutter Creek. Bret Harte needed one more stop to upset Amador, but gave up a fourth-down touchdown with slightly more than a minute remaining.

Argonaut (4-2, 1-0) is every bit as tough — probably even tougher — than Hughson (2-4) or Amador (4-2, 1-0). The Mustangs have their sights squarely set on winning their first MLL championship since 1984.

"We go out of the frying pan and into the fire," Sadler said. "They have more speed and more athletic ability (than any Bullfrog opponent to date) and they have good size, too."

Quarterback Joe Medellin keys Argonaut's "box" offense, which has punishing runners in Conor Drake and Seth Norris and a big target in tight end Mitch Ryan.

The Mustangs have lost only to Trans-Valley League powers Escalon and Ripon. Those team would both be 6-0 if Ripon hadn't had to forfeit four victories for using an ineligible player. Argonaut had a chance to beat Ripon late, but lost 13-7.

Bret Harte will be without tight end-linebacker Robert Peffer and guard-linebacker Mario Sellick. Sellick suffered a possible concussion in practice yesterday, and Sellick is out for non-football reasons.

They'll be replaced by a committee of Bullfrogs, especially on defense.

"We do a lot of rotating, so we have a lot of guys with plenty of game experience," Sadler said.
