Frogs claim share of baseball title

JACKSON — A power surge in the early innings carried Bret Harte High School to a 9-6 victory over Argonaut

on Friday and, simultaneously, to a share of its first Mother Lode League baseball championship in 24 years.

Anthony Bennett hit a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Bullfrogs (15-9, 10-5) ahead to stay, and Sean Nelson added a two-run shot in the second to leave them in firm control on their way

to a three-game season sweep of the Mustangs (12-13, 7-8).

The homers helped turn a 3-1 first-inning deficit into a 7-3 third-inning lead, and it wasn't long before Bret Harte was holding the kind of celebration not seen in purple-and-gold circles since 1979.

"We were all pretty excited," Bret Harte coach Heath Lane said.

Bret Harte shares the title with Linden (15-6, 10-5) and may split it three ways with archrival Calaveras (12-9, 9-5), which still has a makeup game today against Amador (12-11-1, 7-7) in Sutter Creek.

Bennett got the pitching victory, giving up only one unearned run and three hits a after surviving a rocky first that saw him give up hits to the first four Argonaut batters — including a home run to Joe Medellin.

"Anthony pretty much dominated after that," Lane said.

Ryan Carter pitched the seventh because Bennett had worked the maximum 10 innings allowed per week. Together, they survived 11 Argonaut hits.

Bret Harte totaled 10 hits against Tad Bedegrew, who pitched the distance for the Mustangs. Ken Baptista went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Wes Hacker doubled for the Bullfrogs.
