Bret Harte’s Justin Barnes and Calaveras’ Jared Kirk each placed at the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Reno Livestock Convention Center.
Eighty-five teams reprensenting six states (Washington, New Mexico, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada) competed.
Barnes, a 160-pounder, earned fourth place and was the top California finisher. In the third-place match, Barnes was defeated 6-3 by Austin McNichols, of Lowell, Ore.
Kirk, a 285-pounder, earned sixth place. Four of the top six finishers were from California.
In the fifth-place match, Kirk lost by fall to Jake Roumanos, of Spring Creek, NV., 50 seconds into the first round.
