Ryan Stevenson, Bradley Begley, Nolan Dambacher and Karson Canaday combined on a two hitter against Lathrop on Monday to lift the Sonora Wildcat baseball team to a 6-1 Valley Oak League victory.
“Anytime you only give up two hits to a team in the VOL, you’ve had a good day,” said Wildcat head coach Scott Johnson. “Because of the weather, we hadn’t played in a week so we wanted to use all our pitchers to get them some work. We’ve got three games this week and we’ll need all of our arms.”
Begley threw the third, fourth and fifth innings and allowed one unearned run to earn his second victory of the season against zero losses.
Stevenson started the game on the mound and threw two innings allowing just one hit while fanning five.
Dambacher and Canaday closed the game, each tossing a scoreless inning.
Sonora scored a single run in the second inning and then broke it open with four in the fourth.
Curtis Kellogg led the Wildcat 10-hit attack with a 3 for 4 effort and Stevenson and Wyatt Johnson added two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Also for Sonora (10-6, 3-2 VOL), Dylan Fernandes doubled and Justin Payne and Canaday added singles. Canaday also scored a run and drove in one.
“We did what we wanted to do against them,” said Johnson. “We’ve really been working on our two-strike approach at the plate. We struck out six times, which still isn’t great, but we’re improving.”
The Wildcats next will hit the road on Wednesday to battle East Union (2-4 VOL) at 3:30 p.m.
Sonora will finish the week with a home game on Friday against East Union. First pitch is at approximately 5:45 p.m.
