Former Sonorans star in track, softball

Former Sonora High School athletes Chris Heslin, Alli Anderson and Tacy Riddle are more than making their mark in track and softball.

Chris Heslin, who graduated from Sonora in 2000, is a sophomore sprinter who helped Modesto Junior College win the Northern California men's track championship. He ran the third leg on the Pirates' victorious 4x100 relay team and also finished second in the 200-meter dash in the NorCal finals, held last Saturday on the MJC track in conjunction with the world-class Modesto Relays.

Heslin's relay leg broke the race open the MJC came home in 41.08 seconds, nearly a half-second ahead of second-place City College of San Francisco. The Pirates will go for the school record of 40.80 this weekend in the State Meet in Santa Barbara.

Short of a school record, Heslin is hoping his quartet can surpass the second-best time in MJC history, 41.04, run in 1977 by a team that included his former Sonora coach, Robert Cendro.

In the NorCal 200, Heslin — one of MJC}s captains — clocked 21.55 seconds to finish behind the 21.38 posted by Chiyioke Onyenegecha of San Francisco.

Anderson, a sophomore first baseman, helped Palomar College of Vista finish third in the state junior college tournament at Buchanan Field in Fresno. She batted .357 (5-for-14) for the Comets as they went 3-2 in the eight-team state event, which was won by West Valley of Saratoga.

On the season, Anderson hit .370 with six doubles, a triple, 24 runs scored and 31 runs batted in as Palomar won the Pacific Coast Conference championship for the 17th straight year and finished with a record of 48-8. Anderson, a 2000 Sonora graduate, helped the Comets finish fourth in the state as a freshman in 2001.

Riddle, a 1997 Sonora graduate who pitched the Wildcats to VOL titles in 1995 and '96, is off to play professional softball in the Czech Republic. She'll pitch and play first base for a team in the capital city of Prague leading to the Europa Cup tournament in October in Munich, Germany.
