East Union homer sinks baseball Cats

MANTECA — A second straight upset eluded the Sonora High School baseball team Friday as the Wildcats lost 6-2 to East Union.

Sonora (6-16, 1-8 Valley Oak League) had damaged Manteca's title hopes with a 6-5 victory two days earlier in the valley town, and was looking to all but knock East Union (14-7, 6-3) out of both championship and playoff contention.

The Wildcats were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning before Eric Texeira hit a two-run home run to spark a four-run rally that put the Lancers in control. Pitcher Justin Friend took it from there and completed a five-hitter with one walk and six strikeouts.

Josh Townsend and Louis McColloch did the pitching for Sonora, while Mike Taylor went 2-for-3 and Townsend, Brent McKenzie and Casey Ramback had the other hits.

"We played a pretty good game," Sonora coach Mike Silva said. "I was looking forward to a close game with East Union."

Sonora is scheduled to play two home games this week (weather permitting), Wednesday against Sierra of Manteca and Friday against Los Banos.
