The first-round opponent for Bret Harte High School wrestler T.J. Dillashaw has been set for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday and runs through Saturday at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
Dillashaw, the Mother Lode League and Small-School Sub-Section champion and No. 5 qualifier from the Sac-Joaquin Section at 112 pounds, will open against Central Section runner-up Blake Parreira of Tulare.
The winner of the all-junior match will move on to the second round against either Southern Section third-place finisher John Rojas from Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley or North Coast Section runner-up David Huynh from James Logan of Union City.
The Dillashaw-Parreira loser will have a major mountain to climb through the massive losers' bracket of the 33-wrestler draw.
Notables in Dillashaw's half of the first-round bracket are Sac-Joaquin champion Cory Borges of Hughson, San Diego Section champion Sergio Santillan from Hilltop of Escondido, and Central Coast Section champion Bobby Rivera from Overfelt of San Jose.
Santillan has a tough opener against Sac-Joaquin fourth-place finisher Micah Ferguson from Del Oro of Loomis, who was third in the state last year.
Dillashaw, Ferguson, Borges, Sam Fragoza of Calaveras, and Curtis Schurkamp of Escalon have had a running battle all season, and it's probable that some of them will knock heads again this weekend.
Dillashaw is Bret Harte's first state qualifier in six years. He'll be wrestling in the last state event to he held at UOP, which has been the host site since 1988. The tournament has outgrown UOP's 6,100-seat Spanos Center and will be held from 2004-06 at the 10,000-seat Centennial Garden in Bakersfield.
