The Sonora Wildcat volleyball team made a statement in its Valley Oak League opener Wednesday, dominating Sierra 3-0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-14) at Bud Castle Gym.
The 7-time defending VOL champions were led by Shannon Friend, who held strong in front of the net, smashing eight kills. Savannah Lawrence added seven and Angela Gardella smacked five.
“It was evident early that we were going to overmatch them so the challenge was to keep my girls focused and continue to work on things we need to improve,” said Wildcat head coach Kim Evans. “The third set, however, we let down and our lack of concentration allowed them to stay in the game. Shannon had five kills late in the game and helped us finish strong.”
Also for Sonora, Kelsie Evans recorded a solo block, and Kiana Pisula and Lawrence each had a block assist.
Bella Bergamashi registered a team-high 19 assists with Maria Chacon contributing eight.
Bailey Henington generated seven digs, Chacon five, Bergamashi and Leah Dambacher four.
Makenzee Hope was a forced to be reckoned with serving the ball. She hammered four aces and Bergamashi had three. Chacon and Pisula both finished with two each.
The Wildcats next will host Kimball on Monday at 6 p.m.
