TWAIN HARTE — David didn't beat Goliath this time, but gave him a pretty good run for his money.

Tiny Calaveras American of Angels Camp and Copperopolis found itself against enormous and traditionally powerful River Park of Fresno in the first round of Little League baseball's Section 6 Tournament last night at Eproson Field.

The little guy loaded up his sling and let fly, but the giant avoided the stone and River Park posted a 3-0 victory.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when River Park — representing District 10 — got a two-out single from Nick Salles to plate two unearned runs. The Fresnans added a run in the fifth when J.T. McDonald doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

River Park's bid for a no-hitter ended when the top of the sixth began as Justin Dillashaw led off with an infield single between shortstop and third. One out later, Clay Ham made things interesting by singling just inside the third-base bag. Travis Goldberg hit into a fielder's choice, leaving runners on first and third, but Crough slammed the door with a game-ending strikeout.

Goldberg pitched the first three innings for Cal American, Cody Lane twirled a scoreless fourth, and Ham worked the fifth.

Cal American comes back today at 5 p.m. against Morada of the Stockton area (District 8), needing a victory to stay in the five-team, double-elimination tournament. Morada lost 6-4 to Visalia National (District 34) last night.

River Park plays tonight at 8 against Hanford National (District 61).

Juniors

A combined Tuolumne County team representing District 15 will open the Junior section tournament for ages 13 and 14 tomorrow at 4 p.m. against District 8 (Tracy) in Selma, south of Fresno.

The winner plays again Sunday at 4 p.m. against either District 10, District 34 or District 61, depending on what happens in other games. The loser comes back Saturday at 4 against either District 34 or District 10.

Minors

High Sierra's District 15-championship team also begins section action tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Selma against District 8. Both the Minor and Junior tournaments originally were to be played in Sanger.
