Claim Jumpers suffer pair of tourney losses in Elk Grove |
The Columbia Claim Jumpers basketball team suffered a pair of tough losses on Thursday and Friday in the Cosumnes River Tournament in Elk Grove. On Thursday against Feather River, the Claim Jumpers were ahead 73-72 with 14 seconds remaining and were inbounding the ball. But after two quick turnovers on their next two possessions, the Claim Jumpers trailed 76-73 and failed to hit a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer. “Turnovers cost us the game,” said Claim Jumper head coach Nate Rien. “We’re playing a good schedule right now and we’ve had a chance to win every single game. It’s been fun, but we’re young and we’re hoping to turn around some of these close losses into wins.” Feather River led Columbia 43-35 at halftime. For Columbia (2-5), Keith Robinson had 21 points and Alston Friday added 18 points. On Friday, Columbia fell to Napa Valley 78-73 after holding a 36-27 halftime lead. “Napa got really hot in the second half. I mean extremely hot,” said Rien. “Their shooting was off the charts.” For Columbia, Robinson had 21 points, including four 3-pointers, Tony Williams added 16 points, Wayne Surin had 15 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, Friday had 10 points and Jarron Crump five. The Claim Jumpers next will face Chabot on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the 74th Modesto Junior College Tournament. |
