Claim Jumpers drub Gavilan to start new year

Columbia College head coach Rob Hoyt and the Claim Jumpers basketball team started the new year on a winning note.

Freshman forward Rafe King scored a game-high 22 points and the Claim Jumpers blasted Gavilan College 67-45 on Saturday in Gilroy.

Summerville graduate Rosendo AmayaWood broke out with 14 points.

“We played a very good game,” said Columbia assistant coach Rick Francis. “AmayaWood probably had his best game and King shot the ball well.”

Jordan Gomez, a Bret Harte graduate, dropped just two points but his command of the offense at the point guard position was crucial.

“We got a really nice job out of Jordan Gomez running the team tonight in place of Robert Orantes,” Francis said.

Columbia shot 91 percent from the free throw line on 11 of 12 attempts.

King drained a team-best four 3-pointers and Daniel Radford added two.

The Claim Jumpers (7-8) hosts College of the Sequoias on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to open Central Valley Conference play at Oak Pavilion.

“Excellent defense tonight by our kids,” Francis said. “Great win going into league next week.”
