Cats eliminated by No. 1 Foothill

SACRAMENTO — Sonora High School couldn't buy a bucket, especially from close range, and lost 57-26 to top-seeded Foothill last night in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III boys' basketball playoffs.

The Wildcats (12-14) made only three shots from inside the 3-point arc and would up shooting just 7-for-29 (24 percent) overall.

"You can't shoot like that and expect to win, especially against a team as good as Foothill," Sonora coach Rick Francis said. "They're a very good team, very quick. But I'm proud of our guys. They played hard. The score was terrible, but the game was closer than that ... it really was."

The Wildcats trailed 27-17 at halftime and opened the second half with a field goal to draw within eight, making Foothill (26-2) and its coach, Drew Hibbs, nervous. The Mustangs responded, though, by forcing a spate of Sonora turnovers and converting them into points to break the game open once and for all.

Sonora's leading scorer, with only six points, was senior guard Travis Hendrix. He hit two of the Wildcats' four 3-pointers, while junior forward Robert Johnson and senior guard-forward Aaron Jolley hit the other two.

Sam Kirby was one of three Foothill players to score 13 points.

Bullfrogs ousted

Bret Harte hung around for about a quarter, but its hopes of an upset were soon put to rest as third-seeded Hilmar pulled away for an 81-49 victory last night in the first round of the Division IV playoffs.

The No. 15 Bullfrogs (11-18) trailed just 17-14 late in the first quarter, only to see the Yellowjackets (25-3) go on a 10-0 run to effectively put the game out of reach.

Forwards Scott Russell and Travis Emerson concluded their Bret Harte careers by scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. Hilmar got 21 from Michael Medeiros, 16 from big guy Kurtis Van Foeken, and 13 apiece from Lance Hunter and Bobby Avilla.
