Calaveras sweeps competition at MLL/ TVL track Challenge

The Calaveras Redskins track and field squad swept the team competition on Thursday at the Mother Lode League and Trans Valley League Challenge in San Andreas.

The Calaveras boys scored a combined 88.33 for first and Bret Harte followed with an 87. Summerville finished 10th.

For the girls, the Redskins dominated the field with 127.5 points, 54.5 more than second-place Riverbank. Bret Harte was third and Summerville was 11th.

In the individual events, Bret Harte had seven first-place finishes, Calaveras five and Summerville one.

Bullfrog senior sprinter Tristan Boblet took first in the 800 and 1600 meters. In the 800, be topped Hilmar’s Gabriel Texeira by .50 of a second at 2:05.18, but beat Texeira by more than 10 seconds in the 1600 at 4:42.19.

Bret Harte sophomore Casandra Gonzales was the top runner in the girls 400 (1:07.26). The Bullfrog 4x100 relay team of Jenny Rapetti, Kaylynn Davis, Gonzales and Bailey Van Zant edged a Ripon quartet for first at 54.36. Junior Clara Jefferson threw the discus 113 feet, nearly 22 feet more than the second-place finisher, for first. Long jumpers Jake Piel and Van Zant both placed first. Piel cleared 20-05 and Van Zant 16-09.

For Calaveras, Alexander Robie finished first in the 110 meter hurdles (16.42). Shot putter Isabella Lohsen’s throw of 34-04.25 fielded a top finish and Kelly Airola cleared 5-02 in the high jump for first. The Redskins’ 4x100 relay team of Dante Piantineda, Caleb Bolton, Randy Redman and Tristen Harrison placed first at 45.19. Senior Brianna Biondi had the other first-place finish in the triple jump (30-09.50). 

Chris Hoffman-Brady had Summerville’s lone top finish in the 3200 meters at 10:20.53.

Other notable performances for boys were Piel in the 100 meters (11.77, second), Bolton in the 400 (55.09, second), Harrison in the 200 (23.92, third) and Bret Harte’s Jared Taylor in the shot put (41-01.50, second).

Calaveras’ Hannah Hull and Isabella Moyer finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 and 1600 meters. Biondi was second in the 100 meter hurdles (18.85). Sheridan Loverin placed third in the 800 (2:35.52). Redskins 4x400 relay team of Airola, Moyer, Hull, and MaggiJo Erickson finished second (4:32.14). Summerville’s Kiki Cazares was second in the 3200 (13:39.14) and Bret Harte’s Brenna Sprake was second in the pole vault at 7-06.

Up next for Bret Harte is the Bronco Distance Carnival on Friday, March 28 at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks. Summerville heads to the County Clash at Golden Valley High School on the same day and Calaveras hits the road to Gilroy for the Avis-Kelly Invitational on the same weekend.
