COLUMBIA FALLS TO SISKIYOUS AT MJC TOURNEY |
MODESTO Columbia College's basketball team had a rough shooting night and lost to Siskiyous of Weed, 70-59, Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the 65th annual Modesto Junior College Tournament. The Claim Jumpers (8-5) shot 7-for-22 (32 percent) from 3-point range and 16-for-39 (41 percent) from inside the arc for a total of 23-for-61 (38 percent). The only Columbia players who found the range consistently were shooting guard Derek Olich and point guard Mike Smith. Olich went 4-for-8 on treys and 7-for-13 overall on his way to a team-high 18 points, while Smith went 2-for-3 on threes and 4-for-7 overall on a 10-point night. Olich also dished five assists and Smith four, while forward Kevin Massey pulled seven rebounds and center Adam Avery five. The Claim Jumpers trailed 36-29 at halftime to the Screamin' Eagles, then rallied for a 57-57 tie before fading in the last four minutes. Siskiyous had a first-round bye in the tournament and now advances to play tournament host Modesto in the semifinals tonight at 6:30. Columbia, which opened Wednesday night with an 84-82 victory over Lassen of Susanville, play the 3 p.m. consolation semifinal today against Shasta of Redding. If the Claim Jumpers win, they'll play for the consolation championship Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against either Lassen or Compton. Shasta won 77-49 over Marin of Kentfield and Lassen 84-67 over Sierra of Rocklin on Thursday, while Compton lost 97-79 to unbeaten Fresno. Fresno meets Reedley in an all-Central Valley Conference semifinal tonight at 8:15.
