A flurry of errors in the fifth and seventh innings by the Bret Harte baseball team's defense allowed Hughson to hand the Bullfrogs a 9-6 loss yesterday in their final preseason tuneup at Bret Harte diamond.
Bret Harte (4-3) committed a total of nine errors, including four in Hughson's four-run fifth inning and three more in Hughson's three-run seventh, leading to eight unearned runs.
"That's the most physically upset I've been in a game," Bret Harte coach Heath Lane said. "We gave them 30 outs and played with only 21."
After Judd Bales' two-run home run in the bottom of the third turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead, the Frogs fell apart in the top of the fifth.
Starting pitcher Anthony Bennett (5 IP, 6 R, 0 ER) allowed just two hits in the fourth, but was victimized by four errors behind him as the Huskies scored four times to take a 6-3 lead.
Bret Harte cut the gap to 6-4 in the home half of the fifth with back-to-back doubles by Bennett and Sean Nelson (3-for-3, two doubles, RBI, run).
But Hughson capitalized on three more Bret Harte errors in the top of the seventh, scoring three times off relief pitcher Ryan Carter to take a 9-4 lead.
Travis Emerson's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh produced the final runs of the game.
The Bullfrogs open their Mother Lode League season on Friday against Calaveras in San Andreas.
