Bullfrogs wrap up 6th straight MLL crown

The term “6-peat” seems almost unreal as winning 97 straight league matches.

But that’s Bret Harte golf.

The Bullfrogs concluded their unbelievable regular season Thursday by winning the Mother Lode League Championship tournament at La Contenta to clinch their sixth consecutive league title.

Defending Division V champion and this year’s MLL Most Valuable Player, Alex Milward shot a 78 and All-League teammate and fellow senior Rodney Riner carded a 79 to lead the Bullfrogs to a team score of 432, edging Calaveras by three strokes for the crown. Milward finished second overall behind Argonaut’s Austin Oliver who shot a 77 on the par-71 course. Riner finished third.

“I was really happy with the way Alex and Rodney played today,” said Bret Harte head coach Rich Cathcart. “To win on Calaveras’ home course, while playing the back nine for the first or maybe second time, was quite impressive. Our younger kids were real happy for the seniors.”

On Tuesday, Bret Harte continued a 6 1/2-season-long streak where they have not lost a head-to-head match in league play and capped off the week in style by winning the end of year tourney.

Jayden Saville shot a 90, Nicholas Tribble a 92 and All-League honoree Colin Casey recorded a 93 to finish the Bret Harte scoring.

The Redskins, who finished second in league, were led by All-Leaguer Sean Fitzsimmons with an 81, Garrett Williams, also an All-League honoree, shot an 86, Jake Grant an 88, Austin Williams with an 89 and Alec Brotherton with a 91.

Summerville was led by Jesse Roberson’s 89 and finished the tourney in fourth.

Also for the Bears, Kyle McLaurin fired a 92, All-Leaguer Charlie McClung a 94, Max Wulf shot a 110.

As teams, Bret Harte and Calaveras qualified for the Division V tournament on Monday at Stevinson Ranch.

As individuals, McClung and Roberson will represent Summerville.

But if the Bullfrogs can continue to post low numbers, D5 competitors may have to watch Bret Harte raise a blue section title banner.

“If we’re gonna have a chance, we can’t have three of our guys shoot in the 90s,” Cathcart said. “But I think we’re capable of winning it. The team has been playing very well. If they keep playing the way they have, we should be right there. It will take a good team effort. We play pretty well down there, it won’t be anything new for our kids.”

Tee time for the divisional tournament is at 9 a.m.
