Bullfrogs lose on road to Hughson

For The Union Democrat

HUGHSON—The Bret Harte Bullfrogs football team travelled to Hughson High School Friday looking to spoil the Huskies’ homecoming. The Huskies, however, would not let the event be tarnished so easily.

Behind a well-balanced offensive attack that racked up 470 total yards, Hughson controlled the action to come away with a 40-7 victory. Huskie quarterback Kyle Kerlee went 10-13 for 212 yards and a touchdown, while Tanner Duron rushed for 107 yards and three scores.

The Bullfrogs gained 194 yards of offense. Bret Harte senior quarterback Chad Testa completed 10 passes for 119 yards. The Frogs’ touchdown came off junior Peter Conrado’s 88-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

“I caught it around the 10-yard line,” said Conrado. “I was just running straight up the middle when I saw a couple of my guys lay wood and a lane opened up. I just ran for the hole as fast as I could. I can’t thank the team enough for their good blocking.”

It was an impressive play to lift the spirits of a Bullfrog team that was feeling frustrated.

On the ground, Bret Harte gained 75 yards on 22 rushes. Testa led in rushing with 44 yards, while sophomore Logan Lowe gained 30 yards.

Senior Sean Hale caught 4 passes for 63 yards and was Testa’s favorite target. Juniors Alex Marshall and Jacob Bailey each had a reception, gaining 44 and 14 yards, respectively.

The Bullfrog defense, although giving up 470 yards, made a number of nice plays. Late in the game, the defensive line made many tackles for loss on Hughson running backs. This is in addition to two forced fumbles, one of which the Bullfrogs were able to recover.

“I knew they were going to be tough,” said Testa, “but I thought we would be able to get a push on the line and open up some holes. I don’t know, we just didn’t execute. Hopefully next Friday, we will come out a lot more focused. It’s more our mental game that we’re not playing to.”

Indeed, it seemed that there were many occasions where the Bullfrogs failed to capitalize on prime opportunities. On the other side of the spectrum, the Huskies took advantage of any and all positive positions they found themselves in.

“There’s a lot of frustration on everybody’s part,” said Bullfrogs head coach Scott Edwards. “We need to carry out our assignments, and we made a lot of mistakes tonight. It’s not a lack of effort, we prepared well this week. We were very confident coming into this game. Bottom line: we may have gotten overly-excited, and we did not carry out our assignments well. Hopefully we’ll learn from the film and stop making the same mistakes. Weaknesses were seen. We saw them ourselves, and obviously our opponents saw them as well and attacked them and we didn’t change our play.

“I don’t think Hughson is that tough. They were not physical, and that’s where the frustration comes from. Physically, we are a stronger team than they are, but they were more prepared and carried out their assignments better.”

The Bullfrogs (1-3) will attempt to improve their game when they take on Brookside Christian (2-1) this Friday at home.
